Well, you start by very carefully selecting the field in which you want to become a research scientist. It's okay to take different courses in your first and second year of college to explore this. However, you should have an idea of your undergraduate and graduate majors by the beginning of 3rd year. You don't have to do major in the same thing as an undergraduate and graduate student. However, if you don't, the majors should complement each other in a meaningful way. Do well as an undergraduate and get into a good post-graduate programme.
