Read all the greats, but don't skip the more obscure writers. Read magazines. Get yourself a library card if you don't have one, and if you cant does that, check Google Books and Google Magazines.
2. Travel writing includes hotel reviews and destination guides, published in guidebooks and in glossy travel magazines. But travel writings more than service pieces.
3. Start writing a blog, thousands of writers have published their writing primarily or exclusively on their blogs.
4. Develop online presence through Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms to connect with other writers, editors, and readers.

Travel columnists are people who have a passion for writing and they are very clever to club it with their knack to travel.
To become a travel columnist, one needs to understand that it would not really be a sit all day job because to be able to pen down something different and exciting about a location/ culture/ people and food, you should be willing to take the risk of experience.
Mostly travel columnist belongs to the journalism background, hence you can complete a 4-year degree in journalism or you can even go for some online courses.
