How can I become an Aircraft Mechanics and Avionics Technician? What kind of starting salary can I expect?

Hello, To become an Aircraft Mechanic or an Aviation Technician, one gas to undergo three years AME course after completion of 10+2 with physics & mathematics. These courses are conducted by many institutions in India. In some places, there is entrance exam while at others admission is based on marks obtained in 12th exam. Once eligible, a student can select either of the two streams of mechanical or avionics. Merely passing the course does not make one eligible to work on the aircraft straight away. One needs to obtain a license issued by DGCA. Only license holders are allowed to work on aircraft. With the boom in the aviation sector, many Indian carriers have placed orders for aircraft. All these will require license holders to maintain. Thus in near to medium term prospects of AME are quite good. Depending on the company, one can expect a salary of about Rs. 50K.

With the boom in the aviation industry, choosing to become an AME would be a good option with thousands of new job openings coming up with the growth of new regonal airlines under the UDAN scheme and also because of the rise of the budget airlines or the LCCs. A person has to have a minimum qualification of 0+2 with PCM subjects in order to undertake an AME course. There are two streams in AME, Avionics and Aircraft mechanics. One can choose what interests him the most and can go forward with it. With airlines like Indigo alone having more than 150 aircrafts with more than 600 on order, the demand for new AMEs is every increasing for the regular servicing and maintenance of these huge fleets of various airlines. The salary package usually depends on the airline one gets placed in and the starting package can be anywhere between 25k to 50k INR depending on the airline.

There are two streams in aircraft maintenance engineer department, one is mechanical stream and another one is avionics stream. Starting salary for this aircraft maintenance technician will be around 50 thousand in India.
