Interested students should complete higher education in physics, chemistry and biology before applying to colleges. A list of medical colleges accredited for M.B.B.S. by the Medical Council of India is made available through the Medical Council of India website. The requirement for medical college entry may be different in different States, some using the Class XII board examination marks for ranking, and the others administering their own entrance examinations. A centralised system for admission exists in addition to the individual State-based admission system. Fifteen per cent of the seats from all States except Jammu and Kashmir and Andhra Pradesh are made available through the Central quota. Admission through Central quota requires qualifying through the All India PM/PD entrance examination. In addition, many prestigious institutions such as AIIMS, PGI and JIPMER conduct their own entrance examinations. For the PM/PD and other institution-specific entrance examinations, many classroom and correspondence courses are available. Understanding medical education Basic medical education will include four and half years of M.B.B.S. and one year of rotating internship. Upon graduation one will be able to practise as a general physician. Individuals wishing to specialise may pursue further training in their field of interest. Networking with alumni who have obtained overseas training will be useful for those interested in going abroad, as the process involves numerous steps.
