The Institution of Engineers India (IEI) is the national organization of engineers in India. The IEI conducts examinations of its associate membership. This examination (Section A & Section B) is considered to be on par with BE / B.Tech.
Candidate who plan to appear for Section A & B are required to apply for membership as first step in joining AMIE. The membership is a term which is to be taken in the same sense as that of admission. Based on basic qualification, there are different classes of memberships.
(a) Senior Technician: Three years' Engineering Diploma holders, with minimum 18 years age are eligible for applying Senior Technician (ST) Membership.
(b) Technician: Plus Two holders (Physics, Chemistry & Maths) with minimum 17 years age are eligible for applying for Technician Membership.
(c) Associate Member: B.Tech/B.E holders (and those passed Section B of AMIE) with minimum 21 years age are eligible to become Associate members.
The AMIE examinations are conducted in every June and December.
Section A Examinations: Technician Members who have been on the role of the Institution of Engineers for a year are eligible to appear in the non-diploma stream examination based on their date of election to membership. Senior Technician Members can appear in the Diploma stream.
Section B Examination: After passing Section A completely, the student will be admitted to appear for the Section B examination and after passing min. 5 papers of section B in respective branch, the student will be admitted to appear for Project Work and for Laboratory experiments. This consists of 9 papers of which 6 are compulsory and 3 optional. Currently, only the following branches of engineering are covered: Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Production Engineering, Textile Engineering.
