Admissions programs value scholastic, extracurricular, athletic and interpersonal capacities. A multiplier may be "legacy" status, but an applicant can't modify this one (unless he or she gets him- or herself adopted by an alum), so it's better to ignore it. Considering the four above, then, what can you do? Be an exceptional student. Pursue the most intellectually stimulating academic work you can find and excel. Achieve high SAT/ACT scores. Stand out in something extracurricular. Cultivate a passion for service. If you don't already feel driven to help people less fortunate than you (there is always someone), fervently search out experiences that can help you internalize the human condition and awaken that wellspring of empathy. Develop mastery in a hobby. Broaden your perspective on the world and find a niche in which you can differentiate yourself from your peers. Pursue it with vigor. Dominate a sport. Find an athletic pursuit, apply your focus and wholly commit yourself to the demanding, exhausting, difficult task of focusing on continual improvement in your abilities. Be driven and magnetic. Identify your je ne sais quoi and nurture it. Through the facets above, you will naturally develop a level of self-confidence that makes people want to talk to you, want to be around you; this character trait has direct influence on the success you'll have in life and is a quality generally selected for (whether consciously or not) in interviews.
