How did you decide what career or profession to pursue? What / who influenced those decisions?

Career or profession remain with us throughout our lives, so the decision of choosing one is very important and needs a careful deliberation and exhaustive process to narrow down to the right choice. Some major factors which govern this decision are: Interest : A lot has been written and made in interest. The two major things while dealing with interests are: Interest keeps on changing as per your situations. You need to narrow down to interests which can be monetized or commercialized. Aptitude: In Indian context Aptitude is perhaps the most underrated and abused term. We train students for writing the aptitude tests ! Which is exactly the opposite of what is required. TRAINING or COACHING for aptitude tests like JEE mains & CAT etc actually defeats the very purpose of these tests. The institutions need the natural ability not the trained robots for learning. Market scenario: Most of the jobs which are present today will be wiped out by changing technologies in next 15 years. This makes it very important to see if the industry and kind of job roles what you are training for have their shelf life left or not. Family background: Like it or not, call it nepotism or whatever term you can think off. Family background plays a vital role in your career decision. More importantly when the parents are professionals. There are millions of examples in current times and throughout the history where the progeny usually takes the legacy careers. Qualification/skill attaining: You can be born with skill, interest, aptitude etc but the real deal starts when you start attaining the vital skills to start your choice of career. Many of these not only require skills but qualifications also. The last point here is to chose the right service provider for attaining the skills, nuances and qualifications i.e your UNIVERSITY. The necessary points to keep in mind for choosing the right university are as follows: Availability of Course of your choice and Industry recommended curriculum. Infrastructure like labs, libraries, equipment, software to support the training. Qualified and high quality research based culture and competent faculty. Diversity of students, for developing right sensibilities, cross cultural team work and interpersonal skills. Professional enhancement as part of curriculum. Based on the interest, the options/programmes which one can go for, and the guidance of my mentors one can go on to choose their profession. LPU is one of the leading private universities in North.
