How is civil engineering in terms of placement?

In terms of placements, frankly, very few institutes have campus placements. Maybe that is the reason many civil engineers opt for IT companies in campus placements. Also, if you compare the salary package you get in civil with many of the other branches there is a high chance that you might be disappointed. There are very few companies who go out for campus placements in the first place, but a very good thing about the branch is that there are jobs always in the market.
