Since, the gender ratio in India is 943 females per 1000 males according to 2011 census, you will definitely find more male employees than female employees in every sector of the economy including hospitality industry.
Most of the people in India aren't aware of the opportunities that Hotel Management may provide to the Graduates and therefore they don't send their children for the course. Cooking at home for family members is way different from cooking bulk food for hundreds and hundreds of customers. When you cook at home, it would usually require a few pounds of food materials whereas bulk cooking requires hundreds of pounds worth of groceries to be cooked.
Cooking so much food at a time, and that too for hours at a stretch would require a lot of man power and extensive energy usage. Besides, the hotel industry is a 24/7 industry and requires doing night shifts as well. This is a very good question. Yes, it is true that the women take lead role in household kitchen, but they are not the leaders in hotels. There are various reasons for that. At home, it is more of a compulsion than choice. I would like to raise a question here in this forum to all the ladies, given a choice, how many will volunteer cooking at home? Now, comes the part of hotel industry where cooking means bulk cookery. It requires a lot of physical labor adding to cooking. This is a very popular argument as the current scenario support the statement in the questions.They are actually way fewer women chefs as compared to males.
Some of the reasons are pretty clear:
The extensive and long late working hours: they are no limits to the no. of hours that chefs need to put into the kitchen and has the gender that has inter home responsibilities generally such off timings are not preferred by women.
