No branch is good or bad because it depends on your interest. Just if you have interest in metallurgy go and spend your 4 years with full dedication. Those who want to join Indian Engineering Service should select civil, electrical, mechanical or electronics instead of metallurgy.

Metallurgy is a highly specialised branch. Although all-metal producing industries employ metallurgists the bulk demand comes from steelmaking industry. Hence, its prospects are highly dependent on the condition of the steel industry. Unlike other core disciplines like electrical, mechanical and civil where demand is always there, the demand of metallurgy is highly fluctuating and time-dependent. But who is interested in a higher study this discipline provides better scope compared to many other engineering disciplines. Yes, metallurgy is indeed a great branch. With newer materials required for solar cells, batteries etc., need for research and extraction as a mineral is having a tremendous scope.
