Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) was founded in 1958 with the help of funds provided by UNESCO. It was the first Indian institution to be established with foreign assistance. In 1961, the public engineering institute was declared an 'Institute of National Importance' along with all other IITs. Also, it is recognised as an Institution of Eminence by the Indian government. The institute has a sprawling campus situated in Powai, Mumbai. It consists of 16 departments, 19 centres and one school of excellence offering numerous Bachelors, Masters and doctoral courses, as well as four interdisciplinary programmes.
