BHU has become more vibrant and inclusive since the time co-education was introduced in its Faculty of Social Science and Faculty of Arts. While the IIT-BHU still has a more conservative culture, BHU offers its students more freedom and facilities.
Students are free to eat at any mess, regardless of their hostel. The cost of a general diet is INR 40 - 45 per day, and the cost of a special diet (served twice a week) is INR 50 - 90 per day. Students with friends at IIT have access to higher quality food.
Despite only accommodating 30 - 40% of its students in hostels, BHU is the largest residential university in Asia, with over 70 hostels.
