Established in 1853, Madras Medical College is the third the oldest medical college in the country after Ecole de Medicine de Pondicherry and Calcutta Medical College. The red brick building has been classified as a Grade A Heritage Building. Former CM Karunanidhi made the foundation for a new campus. The new campus was built on what was previously a prison campus. The college is affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University. It has now 9 affiliated hospitals and colleges.
