Candidates can appear in JEE Main exam for three consecutive years from the year of passing their class 12. For example if a student pass their class 12 exam in 2026, they can give JEE Main in 2026, 2027 and 2028. As the JEE exam is held twice a year, students can appear total six times in 3 years.

Candidates are permitted to take the JEE Main exam twice a year, in January and April. To allow for room for development, a student may take the test no more than six times in three years. For example, a candidate can take the JEE Main exam in the both sessions for the following two years if they start taking it right after finishing the 12th grade.
