Approximately, 13 Lacs candidates apply online for the UPSC Prelims in 2023. The number of candidates who apply for the UPSC exam varies each year, with around 11 Lacs candidates in 2021 and approximately 10.5 Lacs in 2020. However, the number of candidates who successfully clear the exam and are selected as IAS officers is much lower, with only 180 candidates being selected annually.

The number of candidates who appear in the UPSC Prelims exam is just 40 to 50% of the total number of applications. So around 6.5 Lacs candidates were appeared in UPSC prelims 2023 exam.
