How many colleges are there in India?

<p>India boasts the third the largest publicly supported higher education system globally. The University Grants Commission is the primary governing organisation at the tertiary level; it advises the government, upholds standards, and facilitates coordination between the state and the federal government. The University Grants Commission (UGC) established 15 independent institutes to manage higher education accreditation. In addition, 15 Professional Councils are established, controlling different aspects of accreditation and co-ordination. There are 1,113 registered universities or university-like institutions overall; there are 43,796 colleges and 11,296 freestanding institutions. In the academic year 2020&ndash;2021 there were 70 more universities and 1,453 more colleges.</p>
