how many times can we attempt a subject in engineering...for how many years?i have to clear 2nd yr backlogs to get admitted to third yr..pls

i had got admitted to direct 2nd yr engg after diploma in 2006-2007....but till now 2012 ..its been 6 yrs i have not yet cleared papers due to sm personal reasons...i wanted to know that how many times can we give a single subject in engg....i have 4 backs nw..after 6 yrs will i be able to attempt
