Preparation for PCS exam is on the same pattern as for IAS. Nowadays, most of the PSCs follow the same pattern in pre-exam. In Mains exam, most of the major Hindi belt states introduced CSAT pattern in Mains (only GS Paper, no optional). The major difference is the level of the question in pre-exam compare to the IAS exam. In most of the states, pre-exam is very simple, factual and straightforward questions are asked. Secondly, they ask a sufficient number of questions from the current affairs. Thirdly, state-specific questions have a very low percentage and vary from state to state (UP/UK-15-20%, Rajasthan/Jharkhand-40-50% questions).

It depends on where you are at now. For an average student completely dedicated towards it, it will take nearly 2 years with the help of coaching.
