The backlogs can be counted by the following ways for the universities in Ireland:

    • 1 Subject = 1 Backlog: Some universities in Ireland follow this manner of counting the backlogs. This means that irrespective of the number of attempts taken to pass a subject, a failed subject will be counted as only one backlog.
    • Number of Re-attempts = Backlogs: Some universities in Ireland count backlogs by the number of re- attempts taken to pass the subject. This means if a student took 5 attempts to pass a certain exam (say Chemistry) then, the number of his backlogs is 4 (Total attempts - 1 original attempt = 5-1).
