Meritorious graduates in mechanical engineering can join as engine cadets after undergoing basic pre-sea training. A one year Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) course after mechanical engineering would give students the licence to enter merchant navy. This one year GME course is all you need to become a marine engineer after doing mechanical engineering.

In addition, after completion of GME, on board training is required followed by exams conducted by marine mercantile department (MMD) to become a engineer officer on board a ship. In addition, a seafare has to undergo other basic course and trainings as required by standard of training and certification of watch-keeping (STCW 1995-98) as amended in 2010 by manila amendment.
