You need to keep your basics clear for all your core subjects. Also, practice and sharpen your quantitative ability. Your preparations for GATE starts from the very the first day of your first year. Make your basics clear in time. Be regular in college or in technical terms , be regular in classroom study. If you have 3rd year students or final year students, then store all 3-4 years question patterns and watch which section ask more no of questions 2nd thing you which section is good or bad.
