    If you understand and analyze a poem, you remember the poem permanently in your life. Appreciation comes first. Literature is fundamentally for enjoyment. You enjoy and you remember.

    More than remembering, you need to understand the essence of both and write it in your expressions. Since you hvnt mentioned your grade level, I can only suggest few strategies as follows:
    1. Read the prose twice and underline the difficult words and understand their meaning. Try to do as many questions possible for that prose as possible.
    2. Write your own summary and read it everyday to memorize.
    3. For poetry, it is important to know the gist of it thru poet's point of view. Write the translation if the need be in simple english first.
    4. If you struggle with language, take a guide and practice from there by writing and not just lear
