You need to appear for NET exam to be able to take admission in PhD. But NET exam has age restriction. This was the age criteria for 2012 NET exam.
Not more than 28 years as on 01.06.2012. A relaxation upto 5 years is provided to the candidates belonging to SC / ST / OBC ( NCL ) / PH / VH categorie

you have to give entrance test for get admission in Ph.D. if you have valid GATE or NET score then you may be exempted from entrance test
