CAT is the entry level test for most of the institutes providing a degree of MBA or PGDM. It is divided into three sections QA, Verbal, LR/DI and you need to score equally well in all the sections. To prepare for the same you can buy books targeting such exams, you can join any institutes which will help you crack the exam. There are colleges like Xavier's, Symbiosis, Narsee Monjee, MICA to enter in which you need to give their respective test where CAT score is not applicable. CAT is the entrance test which focuses on your mental ability to crack the same. You can either join some institute giving coaching for such competitive exams or can get the books from the market which would help you crack the same. Having a higher level of general knowledge would also help you get a good score in CAT.

CAT is one of the accepting exams required for admission to PGDM programme. However, it is not compulsory.
