I am in 12th(comm. without maths, but IP). Am I eligible to become a psychiatrist ?

Hi Sagar, Psychiatry, an important branch of the medical profession deals with mental, emotional and behavioral disorders in a person. To become a psychiatrist, one must pursue MBBS. To sit for MBBS exam, a candidate must have Physics, Chemistry, Biology in +2 as your combination subject . After completing MBBS you need to pursue M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) degree. One could also do a Diploma in Psychiatric medicine (DPM) from a recognised educational institute to become a qualified psychiatrist. Doctors who have successfully completed the entire MBBS programme are eligible for specialisation in psychiatry. They may either do a postgraduate course (M.D.- Doctor of Medicine) in psychiatry or a Diploma in psychiatric medicine (DPM). Besides MD and DPM, The National Board of Examinations conducts a programme called Diploma of National Board Exam (DNB). The DNB is considered to be equivalent to a MD degree. Psychiatry offers a wide range of job opportunities in : -regular hospitals -private clinics -large-scale industries -rehabilitation centers -health centers -nursing homes -polyclinics, etc. Hope this information helps.
