I am in my 1st year of UG in Mechanical Engineering. Is it a feasible time for the preparation of GATE or am I too early for this one?

No, you are not late, as most of the students prepare from 3rd year but you have to be more accurate and prepare well according to the syllabus. Be positive and always prepare calmly. -
Leave GATE. Focus on coding and programming languages. Start GATE preparation from 3rd year. By that time coding would have already made you good enough in C programming, data structures and algorithms. Digital logic and Discrete mathematics are taught during 2nd year in most colleges. So these two would also have been completed. So from 3rd year you can focus on other GATE subjects. And do not forget that even after clearing GATE and getting into IIT you will still have to do coding. Then why not prepare for it from today. Best of luck.
