Mecahnical engineering has many streams. Automation leads to automatic things like robotic and other operations. Designing is totally designing products in CAD. when you want to select which one is the best. Every stream has many oopurtunities it is not this is good and that is bad. you have to analyse yourselves , out of this two in which operations your attitudes looks positive. It should be your own choice based on your inner thoughts. Dont take a decision becasue others advising you to do that. Only if you study, what you like you will be able come out sucessfully in your life.

Since you are in Second year of Engineering , Its better to wait till You finish 3rd Year of Engineering so that You can experience the departmental papers of Mechanical Engineering . Both the fields are rewarding If you are planing to go for Design , Its better to take up Courses of design software like CAD for Automation I would suggest go for higher studies after your Btech .
