I am studying 1st year engineering in Chennai. In which year should I join the GATE coaching and prepare?

You can start the coaching from the fourth semester since you can get the basic knowledge about courses in GATE from these four semesters. It will be a good time to prepare as well. Good luck.

Generally, coaching starts from the 3rd semester. You should join a coaching in the 3rd semester so that you will get a good time for preparations. Good luck.
