Yes, it will surely help you to get admission! I can give you my example here. I hadn't scored too well in the MAT exams, but because I had a very good extra curricular record, I got through to MAPS and I must say I have had a great learning experience so far. So, you might want to try for M

They have a sports quota at some institutuons but unless you are at least a state level player, it cannot be pout to effective use. So I regret that you might not be able to get admission on the basis of you being school basket ball team captain.
