A Diploma student from mechanical may pursue aeronautical engineering. Provided you have to clear CET with good score. You will get admission in second year after you are admitted through CET.

Diploma holders are eligible for lateral entry directly in second of engineering. Which branch of Diploma is eligible for which branch of engineering is normally given in a tabular form by the DTE. Also the process of admission also differs from state to state. It would be therefore advised to visit the webpage for knowing nuances.
