    dear pratik welcome to https://shiksha.com,
The UPSC examination comprises of two successive stages. IPS exam is carried out by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) and constitutes two stages:
The Preliminary Examination andThe Main Examination.
Preliminary Exam comprises multiple choice questions and is also a qualifying exam for appearing into second exam.Main Examination which comprises a written exam and an interview.
Hope i cleared some of ur doubts.
    Wish u very best,
    Arun

The notification for the nest UPSC exam is likely to come in Feb 2012. For this you may read employment newspaper (Rojgar samachar). You need to file your application (you can file it online also) and then sit for the prelims which would be held in May or June 2012. If you clear the same you will have to sit for the Mains exam (somewhere around Oct-Nov 2012) and on standing in some merit you will be called for the Interview. If you stand in merit you would be able to choose IPS.
