You are completely new to the engineering world. The first year is just an advanced level of class 11&12th so, just chill. You will be introduced to the engineering subjects in your 2nd year. You are just a new in engineering. So, just get dissolved in the engineering environment first. You can start studying whenever you want depending on the time you can devote to it and your concentration. You can only give GATE exams while in your final year or after it. I would suggest you start from now itself.
