Hi, Graduate Aptitude Test of Engineering is somehow necessary for core branches like mechanical, civil and electrical for PSUs or doing M.Tech from a better college. GATE preparation can be done in 6-8 months time. However, some people require more time. It is always better to start early (but not too early). So 3rd year of BE is a good time to start so that even if there are breaks in prep due to college semester exams, you can still prepare well. Amit
