i m persuing b.tech. electrical.will it be wise to go for a drop of 1 year to prepare for GATE exam.

Absolutely. In fact serious candidates always prepare full syllabus which has parts of 3rd to 6th sems and revising those topics along with your 7th sem is a daunting task. You must aim for 99.5 percentile so as to get admission in IITs. good luck.
