i messed up my engineering career and am late by 3 years. supposed to pass in 2009 but now in 2012. is my career doomed

I am an above average student who messed up the career somehow by being too careless. i have great potentials but all in vain. is there no way that i can save my career now. if i join a bpo will one year experience get me into some it firm? what should i do.
