To become an IPS officer you need to clear the UPSC prelims exam and then stand in good merit in the mains exam and qualify in the Interview to be able to make your choice for IPS. The next prelims for UPSC is going to be held in May or June 2012 for which notification is likely to come in Feb 2012. Alternatively you can also sit for state PSC exam and get into the merit by the same route (prelims, mains, interview) to be able to select police service at the state level. People at such positions get promoted to IPS ranks in due course of time.
