If someone had not done so much of hard work in his 11th std and he is preparing for IIT JEE 2014, can he still get good rank.

How should i prepare so that i can solve as many problems as i can.? How many hours a day.? How should i prepare myself mentally that i can do it.? and ques.Is it necessary to get admission into an IIT only to get a nice job.?
