Country’s coveted management institutes, Indian Institute of Management have been demanding this for long. And HRD ministry looks like considering it seriously this time. Institutes will start awarding degrees instead of diplomas to its students soon. While the move will help IIMs attract students... View More

@All - I would like to bring to your notice that IIMs PGDM courses were already accepted for joining Phd courses. This was an exception made.
Coming to the topic, yes it is a good move. Everyone, especially foreign schools look at masters degree with a level of superiority and now IIMs will come under that superb layer too.

This is definitely a good move because IIM's already have an international presence and with this move, the value of the IIM's will be enhanced. Now, the students having an IIM degree can apply for international jobs, as well as students from abroad will apply to IIM's.

    My two cents
    - If we go back in history, IIM had chosen to go with Diplomas to keep bureaucracy of UGC out. All IIMs are autonomous, creation of "IIM University" can reduce that.
    - Degree or no degree, the older IIMs already have recognition world over. One can speculate that this is the move to empower new IIMs like Trichy, Ranchi, Kashipur etc; specially when a large section of academia was unhappy with Mr. Sibal diluting image of IIMs.
IIMs needs funding, infrastructure, accreditation, and better food in the hostel mess, not some change in nomenclature.

its a good move as in just qa certification is increased otherwise what i think so is that IIM students are not the ones who study for the sake of piece of paper degree its just a piece of paper. So no matter they issue degree or not they would certainly produce the best students and all students wants to join IIM even they don't issue degree , so according to me its just a extra news in newspaper nothing else .

I think its a good move by IIM's as student will be able to gain Degree Certificates instead of Diploma certificates. After getting Degree Certificate, Students will be able to do further studies like PHD, etc.which was not possible when they had diplomas in hand. Curriculum would be almost same for doing PG.

Its a difficult decision to take as only universities can offer degrees and if B-schools offer degrees then the purpose of universities will get diluted. They should only make all PGDM equivalent to degrees so that students can go globally direct for PhD or DBA.

Well, undoubtedly its a good move, and it will have 2 outcomes:
    1. Now IIMs will attract lot of students from abroad, as most of the best universities in the world offers MBA degree.
    2. Now more and more students can opt for Phd and research.
I would request Dr. Sudhiranjan Dey Raja M G and anjani jha to share their expert opinion on this.

I believe it will serve as an quality improvement measure for I.I.M's since the step has been taken in a bid to increase international acceptability of the institutes as said by H.R.D Minister and will also offer mobility to the students.
With no alteration in the course curriculum, is it going to be merely a "name change game" ?
To answer, would like to call upon Dr.Goutam Chatterjee and Dr. Sudhiranjan Dey
