after SCJP/OCJP certification you can get some extra advantage when you apply for any job because afetr this certification some part of interview you already cleared

If you want to appear for Java 6 then you can directly apply for OCPJP 6.
But if you are planning for Java 7 would have to first appear for the Associate exam and you will qualify for the OCPJP 7
