Mechanical engineering seems to be one of the most sought after branches in India at the time of admission. This choice is motivated by core Govt. jobs for mechanical engineers, PSU jobs and automobile sector which attracts students and parents alike.
If your interest is in automobiles, I think Chennai/Bangalore/Pune/Gurgaon might be the place to be in currently. Company websites & LinkedIn pages to look into Ashok Leyland, Titan, Hyundai, Tata Motors, BHEL, GE.
