Computer science is a major at most schools, and is in and of itself a study of the science of computing, which is very much based on research, theory and academia. I can't speak firsthand, but I'd imagine a post-doc in computer science is just as satisfying as a post-doc in any other scientific field. A career in software engineering is often associated with computer science, but only in the sense that it stems off the basic building blocks of computer science. Computer scientists are often hired as software engineers, but the two aren't 100% correlated nor do they even share all the same skills. This is more than a superficial separation: you can certainly enter the tech. industry as a SE without a computer science degree (in fact, more and more people are self-taught), and you can get be educated in computer science without necessarily ending up being an engineer (popular alternatives are QA, product management, and a step towards an MBA and finance). So with a career in software engineering, if you ask software engineers you're likely to get pretty enthusiastic responses. The fact is, the job has consistently been ranked as one of the best societies has to offer, from demand to salary to autonomy to stress. Those who do like the function of producing code and building new things are already attracted to the industry, and these positive attributes are the cherry on top of what's already a pretty satisfying job function. These are all the things that exist in the software world, but they're not the point. Computer science is, in essence, the study of how to make things faster, more powerful, more automated, more efficient, more scalable. How to extract meaning from data so complex a human could never hope to understand it by just reading through it, and how to process that on a massive scale.
