Is a career in computer science really worth it?

First point of order is to get the right terminology. Computer science is a major at most schools, and is in and of itself a study of the science of computing, which is very much based on research, theory and academia. I can't speak firsthand, but I'd imagine a post-doc in computer science is just as satisfying as a post-doc in any other scientific field. A career in software engineering is often associated with computer science, but only in the sense that it stems off the basic building blocks of computer science. Computer scientists are often hired as software engineers, but the two aren't 100% correlated nor do they even share all the same skills. This is more than a superficial separation: you can certainly enter the tech. industry as a SE without a computer science degree (in fact, more and more people are self-taught), and you can get be educated in computer science without necessarily ending up being an engineer (popular alternatives are QA, product management, and a step towards an MBA and finance). So with a career in software engineering, if you ask software engineers you're likely to get pretty enthusiastic responses. The fact is, the job has consistently been ranked as one of the best societies has to offer, from demand to salary to autonomy to stress. Those who do like the function of producing code and building new things are already attracted to the industry, and these positive attributes are the cherry on top of what's already a pretty satisfying job function. The flip side is that if coding simply doesn't interest you and this happens more than you think, when so many people enter the industry because they hear about the above good things the choice of software engineering is a tradeoff between doing something they're not passionate about with great career benefits. You don't hear about this a lot, because those who do feel it usually aren't motivated to scream from the rooftops about how awesome their jobs are.

There are multiple job opportunities available in the field of computer science and IT. As per NASSCOM, Indian IT Industry revenues grew by 13% in FY2015 and it added 2,30,000 employees in FY15. IT industry exports grew by 12-14% and domestic market by 15-17% in FY2016. India's IT-BPM industry is projected to grow ~8% in FY2017 to USD 154 billion. (c) Project Management: Technical Professional grow into the role of Project Management with Certification such as PMP, PRINCE2, etc. after a few years of development or testing experience. Some MBA IT graduates get Project Management opportunities directly. (d) Business Analysis: Subject matter experts with domain experience in functional areas such as BFSI, Healthcare, Travel & Transportation, etc. can become BA. Most of the BA are with MBA background with BA Certification such as IIBA or BCS. (e) Business Development: MBA graduates and experienced IT professional have opportunities in IT industry in PreSales support, Sales & Marketing and Account Management. (f) IT support role in quality, technical writing, customer service engineer, etc. These roles are filled with lower education profile professional such as BCA graduates.

When some people think of computer science, they think of mobile apps, or cubicles, or hipster hackers, or gamer nerds, or server farms. These are all the things that exist in the software world, but they're not the point. Computer science is, in essence, the study of how to make things faster, more powerful, more automated, more efficient, more scalable. How to extract meaning from data so complex a human could never hope to understand it by just reading through it, and how to process that on a massive scale. Programming is merely the means to that end. Understanding computer science will change the way you approach everything in life. And it's applicable to virtually everything. Also, yes the jobs are pretty cool.

Computer science is one of the fastest growing fields in the international market. The best candidates for a computer science degree would be those that have a deep interest and passion for computing as it is an incredibly difficult major for those not comfortable with computers or technology. A large portion of the growth is down to the strength of interest and investment in artificial intelligence (AI), one of the most controversial and intriguing areas of computer science research. The technology is still in its early stages, but tech giants like Facebook, Google and IBM are investing huge amounts of money and resources into AI research. Another growing field is Big Data Analytics. From banking to healthcare, big data analytics is everywhere, as companies increasingly attempt to make better use of the enormous data-sets they have, in order to personalize and improve their services. So, Computer Science going to be the first choice of engineers in the coming years.

Yes, a career in computers is worth. As technology is changing at a rapid pace one needs to keep himself/herself up to date with the technology to sustain in the industry. Newer technologies like Big Data, Hadoop, SAP and Android are exploiting the needs of humans. Developing newer software at a rapid pace and cut-throat competition has made this sector desirable for most of the students. Companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Tesla and IBM are doing R&D and coming up with new and innovative products. We can see the pay scales of engineers getting into these big brands have been offered hefty packages. Any person with a Computer Science & Engineering degree has numerous job opportunities. The person can be appointed as Software Developer, Hardware Engineer, System Analyst, System Designer, Networking Engineer, Database Administrator (DBA) and Web Developer. So, a career in computer science in really worth and one needs to keep up with the changing skills to maintain the superiority over others.
