In 2003, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham became one of the youngest institutes to become a deemed university, when it was conferred this status by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Also, AVV Coimbatore has been accredited with an 'A' grade by NAAC in 2009. It was founded with the opening of Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore by Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, and is run by her international humanitarian organisation Mata Amritanandamayi Math.
