    Ahmedabad Medical School and the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital merged after the latter's establishment in 1871. At first, the school only had 14 students enrolled in its medical assistant program. Following his donation of Rs. 20,000 in 1879, Sir Byramjee Jeejeebhoy renamed the school B. J. Medical School dedicated to him. As the school grew, it became a member of the Bombay College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1917. It was elevated to a higher status and joined Bombay University in 1946, when it changed its name to B.J. Medical College and conferring L.C.P.S. degrees.
