Being a specialised Science subject, it is not highly popular as a Union Public Service Commission optional. Nevertheless, there have been toppers who were able to secure a high rank in the Union Public Service Commission civil services exam with botany optionally. Most of the questions are directed at the Union Public Service Commission exam and so it becomes easier for the students to answer. For more detail, you may visit the Shiksha Botany overview page. Taking Botany in UPSC as an optional isn't easy. People would tell you it's easy and all that, but I'll tell you the bitter truth. Students go for UPSC after graduation and take any optional, botany syllabus in UPSC is very tough and of master's level.
If you are enough confident that you are excellent in botany, then only you should take it.
