Not only Cat. There are many other entrance exams I.e MAT, CMAT, GMAT, etc. But CAT is for IIMs.

CAT is necessary only if you want to take admission into any of the IIMs as well as some top non-IIMs like FMS, SP Jain, MDI, etc. However there are various other entrance exams like XAT, SNAP, NMAT, CMAT, etc. an aspirant can give, to get into the different B-schools accepting these exam scores. So it basically depends upon which B-school you're targeting.
