Coaching for JEE is not mandatory. There are lot of students who crack JEE without any coaching. Therefore, I am of the opinion that you can crack JEE with self preparation also. However, coaching can help you to score better if you have talent and metal to do well in JEE.

Yes, definitely coaching is one of the most important part of the exam. Otherwise, you cannot clear it.
