It was established in 1946 and is named after Dr. Harisingh Gour, the founder of the university. The university is funded by the state government of Madhya Pradesh and is under the jurisdiction of the University Grants Commission (UGC), which is a statutory body responsible for the coordination, determination, and maintenance of standards of higher education in India. Therefore, Dr. Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya is a government institute.
