Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute is a private university.
It was founded by Dr. A.C. Shanmugam, who is the chancellor of the university. It received its deemed-to-be university status in 2003 as per the orders of the University Grants Commission and the Union Ministry of Human Resources
