Is free lancing (small projects on individual basis) possible in animation?? Or one has to opt for a full time job only?

I am considering a change in my profession and start afresh with animation. But I do not intend to work full time. Considering so many cartoon channels running 24x7, ads & movies including computer effects to enhance e; is working on individual basis (as a free lancer) for small projects possible?
