Is free lancing (small projects on individual basis) possible in animation?? Or one has to opt for a full time job only?

I am considering a change in profession. I wish to start afresh in animation but do not intend to work full time. Considering cartoon channels running 24x7,ads and movies including computer effects to enhance effectivity, is working on individual basis (as a free lancer) on small projects possible?
